During the installation of the concrete slab the dirt work is done first. This includes removal of the organics such as sod, black dirt, and mulch. Next is placing the forms, getting the correct slope for drainage, and placing gravel and grading to the thickness desired. Gravel and sand provide a stable base for the concrete slab. After grading is complete, compaction is the next step. This step is important to keep the slab from sinking. The last step is to put in reinforcement. Fiber and rebar are the best way to add strength to a slab.
Placing the concrete is more than just pouring it. It involves pouring at the right consistency for the specific project and screeding it smoothly. If concrete is poured too wet it can weaken the concrete surface, but pouring too dry can negatively affect the finish as well. Concrete poured on a steep slope needs to be kept thick.
Another thing to keep in mind is proper curing can add strength to concrete as well. The best way to cure concrete is to saturate it after it is hard enough to not get washed out when wet. The other method is to retain the moisture that is currently in the fresh concrete. This is done with curing compounds.
